Marugame City in Kagawa Prefecture, Japan, is renowned for its traditional craft: Marugame Uchiwa, a hand-made fan with a history dating back to the Edo period. This time, we're proud to introduce a special collaboration that blends heritage with modern artistry. The featured artist is Emi Hoshi, a talented Japanese illustrator and printmaker known for her charming and thought-provoking works.
1. “A Baby Monkey playing at a tag of war” – A Playful Tribute to Udon Culture
In this delightful design, “A Baby Monkey playing at a tag of war”, the beloved Kagawa specialty—udon noodles—takes center stage. On the front side of the fan, a monkey is shown slurping up noodles, while on the back, baby monkeys tug at the same noodle in a playful scene. The piece captures both local flavor and childlike whimsy, making it a fun and memorable item.
2. “Ajisainiamagaeru” – Elegance with Hydrangeas and Frogs
Next, we present “Ajisainiamagaeru”, a serene and sophisticated design featuring hydrangea flowers and a tiny frog. With soft, calming colors and delicate lines, this fan reflects the beauty of Japan's rainy season. It's a refined choice for anyone who appreciates quiet elegance and nature-inspired art.
3. “Ondori” – A Rooster Symbol Bridging Japan and France
Our final piece, “Ondori”, showcases a strong and proud rooster. This design was created as part of our very first exhibition in France, where the rooster is considered a national symbol. Through Emi Hoshi’s refined yet expressive brushwork, the vitality of the rooster is beautifully brought to life in this unique fan.
