Feature Article: The Auspicious Uchiwa Collections - "Seigaiha"

This is the third installment of our feature on the Auspicious Series.

The Melody of Infinitely Spreading Waves

Traditional Japanese patterns are deeply imbued with the wishes of people cultivated over a long history. The Marugame Uchiwa "Auspicious (Engi) series" is a special collection adorned with traditional Japanese patterns and techniques, imbued with heartfelt wishes. This week, we focus on the Uchiwa fan featuring the elegant and magnificent "Seigaiha" pattern.

Symbol of Gentle "Eternity" and "Peace"

The "Seigaiha" pattern is a beautiful, ancient design that expresses fan-shaped, expanding waves by stacking concentric circles. Because this pattern evokes the image of gentle waves continuing endlessly without interruption, the "Seigaiha” signifies “eternity and peaceful lives”, making it an auspicious design. This pattern embodies the earnest and universal wish to navigate the rough seas of life and enjoy gentle and peaceful days that continue forever.

Materials Nurtured by the Land and Artisan Skill

The high quality of Marugame Uchiwa is deeply rooted in its material selection. This Uchiwa uses bamboo grown in Kagawa Prefecture for its frame, and the fan surface employs "Tosa Washi," a traditional Japanese paper.

The bamboo used for the fan's frame combines flexibility and durability, forming the core that creates a light breeze. Meanwhile, "Tosa Washi," due to its delicacy and tenacity, becomes the canvas that vividly reflects beautiful patterns like Seigaiha.

These materials are united by the hands of Marugame artisans, who are known as the largest Japanese Uchiwa fan producer. As indicated by the red emblem certified by the Kagawa Prefecture Uchiwa Cooperative Association, all Uchiwa fans are craft items handcrafted (handmade) in Japan.

The fact that the size of each items vary slightly from one to another because they are all handmade is a unique charm specific to this craft, unlike mass-produced industrial goods. Marugame Uchiwa fans were registered as Japanese Traditional Crafts by the Japanese Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry in 1997.
